Zübeyde Hanım
Atatürk's mother, Zübeyde Hanım, was born in Langaza, near Thessaloniki, in 1857. The mother of Zübeyde Hanım, the only daughter of Feyzullah Ağa, whose family was known as "Sofuzades", and Ayşe Hanım, with whom he had his third marriage, was called "Molla Hanım" because of her wise personality. Likewise, she was addressed as "Zübeyde Molla", the name given to the wise, intelligent, literate women of Thessalonica. Zübeyde Hanım was not sufficiently educated, but since she learned to read and write in her childhood, she was known in her circle as a conservative woman who adhered to her traditions. In this respect, he later wanted his son Mustafa Kemal to first go to the neighborhood school with a strong religious aspect. Because at that time, in neighborhood schools, students were taught only Arabic letters and were expected to be able to read the Quran.
Ali Rıza Efendi
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Thessaloniki in 1841. He is the son of Ahmet Efendi, nicknamed "Red Hafız", one of the Turkmens who settled in Thessaloniki from Söke. He studied primary school at Abdi Hafız Neighborhood School. He worked as a clerk in the Foundations Administration in Thessaloniki and then as a civil servant in the Customs Enforcement Organization. While he was a civil servant, he married Zübeyde Hanım, the daughter of Feyzullah Ağa from the Hacı Sofi family. Ali Rıza Efendi, who served as an officer in the Selanik Asakir-i Milliye battalion in 1876, later started trading in timber. He had five children with Zübeyde Hanım. His children Naciye, Ömer and Fatma did not live long. Only Mustafa and Makbule were able to continue their lives. Ali Rıza Efendi fell ill and died in 1888, while his only son Mustafa Kemal was studying in primary school.
